Case hardening (metals) The process of achieving a powerful surface but maintaining the majority of the properties of the unique metal in the essence. Hardness in steel can be enhanced by multiplying the carbon content. The procedure of heightening the carbon capacity of the surface while sustaining the essence of carbon content in the internal is called case carburizing. The mould of surface which carbon amount has been considerably increased is regarded as the case and the size of carbon penetration is identified as the case depth.
